ART PROGRAM COMPONENTS

PERMANENT ART COLLECTION
The permanent art collection will consist of existing works of art such as paintings, sculpture, works on paper and photomurals as well as some specially commissioned murals and functional decorative accessories and furniture.

Conference Center – For this area, artwork will consist of works on paper and large-scale paintings. In addition, there will be a special commission for the rotunda at the entrance of the center.

Patient Rooms, Staff Lounges and Offices, Conference Rooms, and Family Lounge
s - These areas will be treated with framed works on paper, fine art reproductions and posters. Works will be selected to correspond with selected themes of each area while being appropriate for each age group.

Corridors and Waiting Rooms – In order to provide visual enhancement to long corridors, photomural or hand-painted murals will be applied. Once again, subject matter will correspond with area themes.

ON-GOING PROGRAMMING
Hospitals all over the world are incorporating the arts into patient care. Art programs will create enormous opportunities for community outreach, dialogue, and interaction. There will be many ways in which patients, parents and visitors can have joyful learning experiences in the hospital environment.

Visual Arts Programs – Plans include rotating exhibitions in the corridors of the 2nd and 3rd floors. There will also be artists-in-residence who will create work for the hospital as well as open their studios to patients and visitors. There will be family workshops in which the therapeutic value of artistic expression can be realized.

Performing Arts Programs – The focus of the performing arts will take place in the lobby’s gazebo, a space where music, theater, and film can be enjoyed by patients and visitors. In addition, the performing arts may also be enjoyed in selected patients’ areas.

ARTISTS’ COMMISSIONS FOR SPECIFIC SITES
Artists will be commissioned to create artwork for those sites that require the greatest lead-time so they can be coordinated with the construction schedule. These special features have been developed in conjunction with the project architect and hospital center staff. See proposals for these sites.

Exterior Entrance Sculpture – A circular entrance driveway in front of the hospital’s main entrance has been incorporated into the overall site plan. For visitors on a non-emergency basis, this site is their first introduction to the new Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center and its dynamic art collection. Greeting you as you enter the drive leading to the hospital’s entrance, it will become an icon of the hospital and will be one of the main features of the art collection. The Art Committee has recommended that a number of key qualities be incorporated in the final work so that it can be enjoyed during all seasons of the year and all hours of the day.
Commemorative Gift Opportunity $500,000

Lobby Water Feature – The concept of the lobby is one of a small village "Main Street." You enter the lobby on Main Street walking towards the Information Desk at the end of the street. To your left are the Family Resource Center/Library and the General Store. On your right is a 2-story space containing a gazebo, which will be used for performances, and an area for seating. Turning off Main Street to the left, you will pass a Sports Arcade, the World’s Largest Dollhouse and the Food Court. Since it is a known fact that water is extraordinarily therapeutic for its calming effects and its ability to soothe and distract, we have incorporated it into a very special feature, which will captivate visitors as they enter the lobby.
Commemorative Gift Opportunity $500,000

Third Floor Open-Air Courtyard - The third floor of the hospital is for patients requiring longer stays. In its midst is a beautiful open-air courtyard, a 5,300 square foot area bounded on two sides by full glass corridors and on two sides by patients’ rooms. For many of the children on this floor, this courtyard will be the only outdoor landscape that they can see and access. Functionally, it must accommodate seating open areas for arts and crafts, passive play, exploration and discovery for both ambulatory and non-ambulatory children, and visitors. We will work with an artist to transform this outdoor environment through the juxtaposition of real and imagined natural forms.
Commemorative Gift Opportunity $500,000

9 Hole Miniature Golf Course – A 10,000 square-foot outdoor miniature golf course that is wheelchair accessible will be built near the main entrance and emergency room. Each of the nine holes will be designed by a different artist to provide a wide variety of fun challenges as they create their unique expressions. The golf course will become a magical experience for patients and visitors alike as they wind their way from one environment to the next, through what will be, in effect, a functional sculpture garden.
Commemorative Gift Opportunity: Naming of Golf Course $300,000
Naming of Golf Hole $100,000

Special Treatment Rooms – These areas include the MRI, Infusion Therapy, CT Scan, Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy rooms, and it is in these environments that patients undergoing treatment spend a great deal of time, often on an ongoing basis. Here artists will create total environments that will distract patients from any trauma associated with the treatment procedures. We see these rooms as having wide age appeal and may encourage creativity and interaction.

Outdoor Healing Garden Sculpture – This feature will provide an opportunity for collaboration between an artist and landscape designer. The healing experience will be enhanced by the sculpture and through plant selection, which provide a range of sensory experiences.
Sculpture Directory – Designed by an artist, the housing of the hospital directory will be a signature of the lobby that can serve as an introduction to the themes to be found throughout the hospital complex. It will also be wheelchair accessible.

Aquariums – Throughout the hospital there will be aquariums that will be placed in activity rooms and public spaces. The concept is to commission artists to design and produce specific environments for aquatic life to inhabit. Artists will also work with a specialist to select fish so that the visual impact of the environment will be complete.

Fireplace – The hearth has always been seen as a place of comfort. An artist will be commissioned to design a facade and screen that will correspond to themes presented in the Family Resource Center Library.
